Max: iPod Mini

I have an iPod Mini.

Fuck yeah!

And when they say "Mini" they aren't kidding. When I opened the box I though they had screwed up and given me a cigarette lighter.

I don't want to upset you, but Bush listens to an iPod when he goes jogging.

Ah. But Max has an iPod MINI. I'm sure the prez can afford to use our tax money to buy himself a full-fledged iPod.

Why would I be upset that Shrub listens to an iPod while jogging?

Oh. Wait. I get it. This is where Max, kneejerk, bedwetting liberal who automatically hates everything about everyone who has the slightest disagreement with him throws a fit and tosses his iPod out.

Sorry, no matinee this week.

No, just thought I'd see where comments would go with it. (blushing) BTW, I don't know much about the iPod, what is it that makes them so much better than other MP3 player/data storage devices?

To be honest, I can't tell you. I am going to admit I that went full on zombie and went with the pretty, shiny package. That said, it has yet to give me reason to regret it so far. I wish I could say the same for the iTrip, but I will be working with that to see if I can get it to behave.

I have not seen one in a while, but in whan I was in Iraq the one of the locals was selling selling USP port data sticks that held data and had a headphone jack to play MP3's also. I know the iPod has more storage than these did, but otherwise don't really see the diff.

Are you people baiting me? Are you people begging me to proclaim aloud the virtues of an Apple product? Am I dreaming??? :)

Where to begin? First things first - for the first time in my life, owning an Apple product is not only cool, but trendy and popular. I mean, if they could get that cache over to the iMac - PCs would be done for!

Now, to the actual advantages. Price isn't one of them! These puppies, at just about every size, are expensive. Sorry, Apple, but that sucks. You are selling more of these than McD's is selling Big Macs - lower the price and you will only sell more!

The iPod plays nearly any audio format you would want, MP3 and WAV being the only ones others play for the most part. The interface is slick and simple. Battery life on the newer models is outstanding! The integration to iTunes and the online store is simple and incredible. The iPod has games and organizer features. The newest iPod, the iPod Photo, has a color screen and allows you to store photos. Actually, all iPods will allow you to store just about any file type - some Mac geeks load up their iPods with MacOS, this way they can go to any Mac, boot from the iPod and it's like they never left their home machine.

Basicly, for the money, you are getting lots of extra features and the cache of owning an iPod. As an owner of a lesser MP3 player, I am jealous of iPods, but I can't cost justify them. They are the luxury model, everything else is just an MP3 player.

That is as maybe. I am in no way saying that the iPod is anything but amazingly awesome. I am just owning up to the fact that I bought into the hype.

I can't afford to buy into anything right now. BTW, Typo earlier, meant USB port. Anyway, Except for very large storage area, sounds a lot like a data stick/mp3 player with a few perks.

You're essentially correct. I own a Rio. It came with 64 MB of space at $79 when we bought them over a year ago. There was no way I could afford an iPod at that point. I bought the Rio because they were expandable. At the time I bought one, you could obtain a 500 MB SD card, although they were quite expensive, too. Other, smaller cards were availible at lower cost.

This past weekend, I faced a trial. I really want an iPod mini. At $200 for 4 GB, it's awful tempting and we have the cash in savings. But, it's still $200. I already own the (expandable) Rio - darn my forethought! SD card prices have been dropping in recent months. A 1 GB SD card can be had for less than $100, and my Rio can handle one. However, the 256 MB card was $40, and since Steph has a Rio, too, we could upgrade both for $80. If you go at 128 bit MP3, the 305 MB that you end up with after over-head gives you about five hours of music. The Rio runs on one AA batery for a VERY long time. In short, it's enough music to work out to and get me back and forth on the bus.

If I was starting this whole process today, I would buy an iPod Mini in a heartbeat. But, with the investment I already have and with the fact that I just don't own 4 GB of music, the extra expense just isn't warranted. Also, Steph started talking about the fact that we should look for a camera that uses SD cards so that when we again upgrade our Rios, the cards won't be wasted. All I heard was "blah blah blah new camera blah blah blah." :)

I just read an article that says IBM has produced technology that will put 100 GB SD card on the market sometime in 2007. Hmmmm ...

G5 = Apple's latest processor.

Cluster farm = multiple computers functioning as one, sharing processors and RAM, turning a groupf of ordinary desktops into a cheap supercomputer.

Why go with desktops? Apple makes a server. A single rack can hold 42 1U servers. *Sigh!*
