Jericho: Northwest Sucks!

How y'all been? Or, more recently, hey, flatlandahs!

Just got back from two weeks in Maine with my in-laws. I already hear some of the noises out there in Constant Reader land, but fear not. Yes, it was a long time to be a guest in anyone's home. But my in-laws are very generous with everything, so it was no problem. My in-laws are the best, I couldn't have ordered a better set from L.L. Bean. Yes, I had very limited access to all things geekish, but, frankly, I ended up missing them very little. I didn't touch a PC for two weeks, I didn't think I could actually do it, but it was really easy. I had people to hang out with and things to do. I had my Gameboy, I read two books and I had Law & Order on Dish Networks - so, yeah, it was easy.

The last time I had two weeks away from work, I was unemployed. I had about two months between jobs, what, seven years ago? We took a week for our cruise about three years ago. Other than that, my time away from work has been limited. I really needed this time off, and I feel much better. I'm not exactly looking forward to work tomorrow, but I'm not dreading it as much as I thought I would.

Having said that, I must tell you this: never fly Northwest Airlines. I mean, if you want to suffer, go right ahead. But, I have had better travel on city buses. Steph traveled on NWA in August, I was forced to stay in Seattle at the last minute. Steph had a terrible trip and her baggage arrived three days after she did. This time, we still had my outstanding ticket, so we had to go NWA again. The flight out was crowded, tight and lacked service of any type. I have had much better service on so-called "economy" lines like Southwest. United blows NWA out of the sky.

But that was just the trip out. The trip back was the topper. The leg from Portland, Maine to Detroit was on the tiniest plane I have ever been on. Mind you, I have been on planes that flew fewer passengers, but I have never had to duck once I stood inside the plane - and this was not even a prop plane! I spent a good portion on that hour and twenty minutes standing in a hunch position because the rows were nearly on top of each other.

Then, we get to Detroit. They get us on the plane, and this plane could not have been any older. We sat on the tarmac for an hour and a half as they tried to get the starboard engine to start - check, please! Finally, we get into the air. We land, de-plane and then we have to wait for our baggage. It took them over an hour just to get our bags to baggage claim, I spent the last minutes of 2005 waiting for our bags - and only most of them showed up! One of our bags went missing - along with bags from just about everyone else on the flight. We finally got in a cab and home about 1 AM - a very long day. Steph went to pick up her last bag yesterday - the only thing we were told is that baggage out of Detroit had been a nightmare all day. What a crock. I will never fly NWA again.

I flew NWA to London and back. The flight to was fine. The flight back was aweful. I don't remember details off the top of my head, but I remember being awake for about 27 hours total due to canceled flights, transfers to new flights, battery problems and lay-overs and weather delays. And all I got was a lousy food voucher. Thanks, NWA.

The food voucher was more than we got! :) Come to think of it, one of the times I came to visit Jason before moving here I flew NWA and they lost my luggage that time too. I was telling a friend about our 'adventure' and she referred to them as 'Northworst'.

Maybe the bankruptcy will shut them down.....and then they won't be able to torture patrons with tiny seats, delayed flights, and lost luggage.

As much as I hate the poor service from NWA, I can't bring myself to hope they go out of business- only becasue of the good employees that would loose their jobs in the process. We've been on the recieving end of such a thing- when Max's job moved to KY and when one of the ISP's he worked for went out of business, so it's hard to just be like "I hope they go out of business". I'd prefer them to be bought out so that maybe the good employees have a chance of keeping their jobs.

I'm sure my wife wouldn't wish evil to anyone, when she is in her right mind. We're both still recovering from this terrible service, so neither of us are in our right minds and the evil wishes are everywhere!

I do hope for a buy out. I hope a service oriented airline buys them all out and retrains all of them!

I didn't mean it like that, Jer. I can totally understand why Steph (and you) would be mad at them and wish them ill at this point. I guess it's just that, in your shoes, my first thought wouldn't have been to wish them out of business. I'd wish ill on the people that handled my baggage and who were morons to me, but not to the whole company. I can't even stay mad at Wal-Mart, much less an airline I barely use. I'm at Wal-Mart a min. of once a week and I get shitty service and swear I'll never go back, but I don't think I've ever hoped for them to go out of business- even if it would be better for small businesses and probably the economies of the third world contries that are forced to sell merch. to Wal-Mart at below-cost or not have any business at all. *gets off soap box*

Fuck that. If some overpaid executive makes a decision I disagree with, the only solution is to make some underpaid lackey my bitch.
