Bush submits new terror detainee bill
"U.S. citizens suspected of terror ties might be detained indefinitely and barred from access to civilian courts under legislation proposed by the Bush administration, say legal experts reviewing an early version of the bill.
A 32-page draft measure is intended to authorize the Pentagon ‘s tribunal system, established shortly after the 2001 terrorist attacks to detain and prosecute detainees captured in the war on terror. The tribunal system was thrown out last month by the Supreme Court.
Senior officials are expected to discuss a final proposal before the Senate Armed Services Committee next Wednesday.
Legal experts said Friday that such language is dangerously broad and could authorize the military to detain indefinitely U.S. citizens who had only tenuous ties to terror networks like al Qaeda."

Someone will bring this to the Supreme Court and it will get thrown out again. Bush is so far off on the right that he is pissing off conservatives everywhere. His word isn't law, and his influence is less and less everyday as his popularity falls.
Bush's presidency may actually do more damage to the powers the office has gained in the last 100 years than anyone ever intended. If Bush keeps pushing his powers, someone will get pissed off enough to talk restricting the power of the office. Bush needs to stop right now, or he may get what Clinton slipped away from.
What bothers me is that Shrub is still getting a free pass from most of the media. He does things on a daily basis that Clinton got reemed for just considering. And he does things that no one in a constitutional democracy should even consider doing. His hubris seems to know no bounds.
As for the SCOTUS, they have broad authority and no power. If Shrub decides to ignore them, secret prisons and "enemy combatants" could be the 21st Century's Trail of Tears.
Then Congress will go after him. He'll keep pushing until he pushes the wrong thing and everybody pushes back. And, besides, he's only got two more years - how much damage can he do that won't be undone by the incoming Democrat?
How much damage? A lot.
As for pushing back, most of the Republicans have already drank the kool-aid and the Dems just want everybody to like them.
I don't want to be chicken little, we need to start paying more attention. I know I come off as a bit paranoid sometimes, but some people still haven't figured out that Iraq had no WMD's and Saddam didn't order the 9/11 attacks.
