But what does your electric bill look like if you own one of those? Would it go up so much that it would cost as much to have it as it would a regular gas car?
I'm all for saving the enviornment, but if it's not going to save people money, they won't buy it.
From what I understand it is cheaper. The main problem is that it moves the emissions from the car's tailpipe to the electrical plant, so there is still a need for clean energy there.
I think we've talked about this site before: CalCars.
They think that it will cost the average consummer $.75 for the travel one would get from a gallon of gas. Of course, you would be in a small, modified Toyota Prius. They are also basing this on the fact that power in CA lowers dramaically in price after sunset.
We should look for cleaner sources of energy on the grid, but the grid is pretty clean when compared to thousands of tail pipes. Wind and solar are expanding on the grid, hydro produces no pollution and coal and natural gas plants are heavily filtered and produce less than all the cars on the road. Nuke plants have their own problems, but they produce zero green house gases.
A plug in hybrid with a flex fuel option is the best way to go for the immediate future. It's what everybody, including the automakers, should be fighting for.

I am all for wind, hydro and nuke. Everything I am reading about nuke shows it to be a lot cleaner and safer than people think.
