Jericho: Christian Weirdos

We have blasted the Christian Reich out here nearly weekly. But, when a shining example of a Christian pops his head up, it's our duty to point to him.

Thus, I point you here.

I stand here and DEFY anyone to tell me that these kids are wrong!

So - if these guys are right, as I'm sure they are, will the Reich change? If the Reich doesn't change, what does that make them?

But that is nowhere near as fun as stoning the infidels.

It's been a few hours since I posted m ironic coment above. I have been thinking about Fundies and Christianity and I have to wonder if the Fundies are really such a large group, or merely a well-organized, highly vocal group who staged a takeover of one of the major political parties.

It's hard for me to think of any Fundies I know. Of the ardent Christians I know, most of them are of the peace and love sort. My grandmother is a Catholic as they come. Mass is a daily affair for her. Once, many years ago, one of my cousins shacked up without the benefit of marriage. Gran stopped talking to him just long enough to realize that she was not going to change the situation, just hurt herself and her grandchild. Since then, she just make it clear that she spends a lot of time praying for her heathen progeny. And she is no Shrub supporter. She is too old fasioned and polite to badmouth the President openly. But the was she refers to "This Mr. Bush", it is clear she is not kean on him.

Then there are my in-laws. My Mother-In-Law is as Catholic as my Gran. She can be a little preachy at times. She dropped plenty of subtle threats that I would regret it if I knocked up her daughter before marriage. But my Brother-In-Law is and has been shacked up for quite some time with his POSLQ, Melanie, and it is clear from how treats Melanie like a belove Daughter-In-Law that she is capable of making peace with us sinners. Mostly she is into the serve your fellow man side of Catholicism. She is part of a group that makes food for recently bereaved spouses and parents (Laura and I were well treated by them when we lost Robin). She also regularly is active in donation drives. My Father-In-Law doesn't push religion at all. Besides threatening my well being if I knocked up his little girl, all I have heard him say about religion is "You take from it what you need and don't worry about the rest."

There is Jason, me mate from London. For him Christianity meant two things, praising Jesus and working for peace and justice.

The most profound example of the peace and love side of Chrisianity has to be the Amish. Remember the shooting at the Amish school a few months ago? Well, according to what little the Amish would share with the media, most of the children in the school volunteered to be shot first, hoping that would be enough for him. After, the village elder gathered the surviving children, some still stained with their friends' blood, and led them in prayers for the shooter's soul. That's right. Their first priority after it was over was forgiveness.

Even among the Fundies there are some truely good people. The Rev. Joel C. Hunter was due to take over as President of the Christian Coalition, but recently resigned because he wanted to shift their focus from anti-gay, anti-abortion and pro-republican to helping the needy and being stewards of the Earth by protecting the environment. The CC's Board of Directors told him that those sort of things were not of importance. So he walked.

Hopefully the good'n's will soon sway the bad'n'.

Wait... WHAT?? I certainly didn't know about this. Mom didn't want us to shack up, but I never remember her telling you that you'd "regret it".

"You take from it what you need and don't worry about the rest." I've always loved my Dad's view on it. It's basically how I do things.

Anyway, I'm really glad that REAL Christians are getting some press lately.

(BTW-- what's the latest scheme with the "labels" thingie, Jer?)

No scheme. New feature from Blogger. Now you will be able to click on a tag and find all the other entries with that tag. Let me know if you hate'em.

I don't hate 'em, I was just wondering what they were. Just with you, it's usually a "get rich quick" scheme. ;)

Can't wait for one of my "schemes" to actually work. So far the only scheme that seems to be going anywhere is a little gem I like to call "401k" ...
