Max: Building the Cortex in Silicon

Technology Review: Building the Cortex in Silicon

An ambitious project to model the cerebral cortex in silicon is under way at Stanford. The man-made brain could help scientists understand how the most recently evolved part of our brain performs its complex computational feats, allowing us to understand language, recognize faces, and schedule the day. It could also lead to new neural prosthetics.

I'm currently reading The Singularity is Near by Ray Kurzweil.

Interesting stuff. Along with talking about The Law of Accelerating Returns (have a look at those links!) he talks alot about simulating the brain, connecting to the brain and going beyond the capabilities of the brain.

This guy isn't a quack either. He does his research, he knows his shit and a lot of people are paying attention to him. I'll put money on the fact that every researcher on this project has read a book by Kurzweil.

Eventually, we'll see computers that do what the brain does and just as effortlessly. We'll connect those to our current high powered digital processors and advanced storage devices on one end and our living brains on the other and become way more than any of us are now!
