Max: A Lone Rational Voice
NeuroLogica
Whenever extraordinary unfathomable human actions take place, like the tragic shootings that occurred this week at Virginia Tech, there is an immediate collective struggle to understand what happened. It creates almost a snapshot of the culture’s current paradigms of the nature of humanity and human behavior. Everyone intellectually grasps for what is at hand to explain events, while career moralizers blame the tragedy on their favorite boogeyman. I don’t pretend to have any profound answers myself, but would like to add my neurological musings and other observations to the conversation.
Dr. Novella's blog is a nice break from the incoherant rantings of morons.

My heart goes out to all the victims families. It is sick how people come out of the woodwork and use situations like this to push their personal crusades. Dr. Phil and the idiot lawyer jump out as quick as possible to rant about the evils of video games and how they are causing this all to happen. Parents, your kids will do this too if you let them play violent video games...Blah, blah, blah. Well guess what morons, um, yeah...umm, apparently he didn't own any game consoles...um, and according to his room-mate, he never played video games. At all. Hmmm, thanks for the sensationalism, but I'll wait for a few facts to get uncovered before I try to lay the blame for this ANYWHERE other than at the perpetraters feet.
BTW, no I do not let my kids play violent video games, unless Arctic Thunder on XBOX is too violent. Being that they are 6 and 3, I tend to supervise any and all computer/game use for as long as possible and make sure they understand the difference video characters and real people.
Video games aside, from what I've read, the guy had some serious emotional issues that had been identified several times. Had he sought treatment, the whole mess could have potentially been avoided.
