Max: Autodidact
For a while now I have been wanting to go back to school to study Comp Sci. I have been teching for a long time and have been wanting to get below the surface of computers, beyond hardware and software troubleshooting. I want to make the software, not just support it.
As with most things I desire, school is out of my price range. Lately, it occurred to me that I know how to read. Further, it occurred that there is a lot of info in books. So, I did some digging around for book recommendations from Comp Sci autodidacts. There are some intriguing Comp Sci books out there. And they all cost a bloody fortune (and sadly, not available at the library). So, rather than buying I have been adding those to my Amazon Wishlist. Hopefully in the not too distant future I will be able to afford them. Though I wouldn't complain if someone generous got them for me.

Are you sure about the library? Large libraries, such as those in STL, can do inter-library loans with other libraries and even Universities. Perhaps if you asked these autodidacts where they think a borrowable copy of these books might be found it might make your librarian's job easier and get the book to you. I'll bet you have a better chance of that happening than you have with cyber-begging!
I'd rather someone just give them to me.
I'm sure you would. With your busy schedule you don't have time to go talk to the library.
Whose side are you on?
I know you are out to destroy me along with everything else good and true in the world, but why begrudge me some free books? It's not like I am asking you to pay for them.
Sometimes, having the embodiment of evil for a best friend can be trying.
I just want you to be the best Max you can be. Waiting around for someone to give you the books you want instead of going out and getting them for yourself slows down the process.
Besides, the best time to kick a man is when he is down!
Because I have tons of money and/or can read dense mathematical tomes in enough time to keep some remote library from repossessing my kneecaps.
I just checked with the Library. There is no copy in the ILL system they can request.
What's the top book on your list?
Concrete Mathematics: A Foundation for Computer Science (2nd Edition)
by Ronald L. Graham, Donald E. Knuth, et al
Am I blind or is that book just not on your list anymore?
It's listed under Computer Science Books, rather than just Books.
Ah! I get it.
$56 for a book. Yup, that's a price heavy book.
Try this:
$12 bucks is much better!
That is much more appealing. If I had $12, I would go for it.
