Max: Tux

I have my new HD installed. I switched from Ubuntu to Kubuntu and am now a happy, full time Linux freique.

It's been a Linux kinda week. I bought a USB thumb drive last night and installed DSL (Damn Small Linux) on the device. Now, via something called qemu, I can launch a Linux session from within Windows.

I feel like a moron. I know nothing about Linux, even though MacOS is essentially FreeBSD. I would like to get my Linux+ cert., so getting set up with the USB drive and some books have been my primary activities this week. Where the moron bit comes in is my utter lack of understanding of what Linux has been doing the last ten years.

The last time I touched Linux, it was a command line interface. Now, there are file managers and GUIs and all kinds of things that modern computer OSs share. It's Lovely! I thought I was going to have a lot of boring hours looking at a command line - so much better!

The GUI is stunningly user friendly. When I get an error, all I have to do is punch it into Google and a get the solution. But, the power is still in the CLI. Like you, my now decade old Linux experience was all CLI. I would like to get my CLI chops back in shape. But the GUI keeps making things so easy.

Did you know there is even a CIV clone? Try typing freeciv into your package manager. It is not as cool as the real thing, but it doesn't suck entirely. I am still considering if I want to install CIVIII under Wine, or just live with freeciv.
