Jericho: UMPC

Who do I have to kill or sleep with to live in this world?

Anybody else notice that this vision of the future from Intel features a lot of devices that look like the grand-children of the Apple iPhone? Hmmmmm ...

There are a couple of options.

1. Be a member of the ruling class. Money and power are a key to any door.

2. Be a servant of the ruling class and convince your master you need these toys to serve him. Of course, that will give you the "power" to work anywhere, any time. Forget about the concept of free time.

3. Learn the skillz necessary to hack your own.

Who has free time now? When I'm not at work, I'm commuting. The rest of the time I get a meal and some sleep. That's about it.

I work in a tech department. One of our primary goals is keeping up tools to allow remote access and remote workers. Yet, our company frowns on tele-commuting. They insist that groups that do a similar function must be physically close to each other, i.e. same floor of the same building. The firm insists that this building be in one of the most expensive parts of the Downtown core for presteige reasons. People still walk around looking for each other instead of using the tools they have like on-line calendars, phones, email, voicemail and even chat.

I can do almost every aspect of my job remotely. Scratch that - they have made enough changes to my job and the software has gotten to the point where I can do EVERY aspect of my job remotely. I haven't physically touched a server, in months. With the remote tools we use, the PC emulator on my Mac, running over the Internet, allows me to do remote work as fast as if I was sitting at the machine itself.

In short, I could do everything I do at work from home, saving me 2+ hours a day of commute time, not to mention the physical space to house my computer and desk at work.

But, instead of thinking of the worker, the firm is concerned with prestige and 19th century work ethics. *Sigh!*

I can't wait until I can convince my wife I can make as much money with my own business as I can workin' for da man!

You're the one who chose not to be thrown on the pile of human refuse comprised of those who have not proven themselves useful to "the man".
