Max: I Feel Safer Already

Terrorist Caught

On the trip home, screeners with the Transportation Security Administration at Los Angeles International Airport found it deep in the outside pocket of a carry-on cooler. Beaman apologized and told them it was a mistake.

'You've committed a felony,' Beaman says a security screener announced. 'And you're considered a terrorist.'

Beaman says she was told her name would go on a terrorist watch-list and that she would have to pay a $500 fine.

'I'm a 57-year-old woman who is taking care of 37 kids,' she told them. 'I'm not gonna commit a terrorist act.' Beaman says they took information from her Washington drivers license and confiscated and photographed the knife according to standard operating procedure.

Did you notice the top line of this story?

Editor's note: This archive story was originally published May 31, 2005.

I'm not sure why the local ABC affiliate in Seattle is re-running a two year old story - or if they even are re-running the story. The date on the post is the 18th and an update is marked the 21st of June this year.

What I am sure of is that every local news cast I am aware of is a gaggle of yellow journalists if I have ever seen one!

I hate the local news! For the last 15 years I have hated the local news. They take basic human trageties (fires, floods, murder) and try to turn them into The Biggest Show in Town! What a load!

Granted, two years ago, the TSA was more than out of control. Even now they are a little whacked - some common sense needs to be restored. But, I doubt that any common sense will come from local news broadcasts. Quite the contrary I would venture.

I would ask Max to pull this post if it didn't point out a greater danger and that is the danger of taking local journalists seriously.

OK, I don't exactly blame them for confiscating the knife and taking her information, but the fact that they wouldn't let her have copies of any of the records is plain bullshit. I mean, they could easily change those documents after she was gone, and she'd not have ANY proof that they were changed. I think I'd just sit there until until my lawyer (yay, Paul) came to help me out. I'd not have left without copies of that documentation.

I wasn't aware that gross abuses by our government had a sell-by date.

That sort of thing happens all the time in the newspapers. If they don't have enough news to report in a day, they will either pull something form the archive or get something from the AP wire. At least they put the date it was originally published on it. It's not like they were trying to pull the wool over our eyes or something.
