Max: I Give Up

Every kid owns a copy of that book.

I own a book that lists survival techniques, uses for bladed weapons and how to start fires.

It's called the Boy Scout Handbook.

It doesn't sound like they have anything else on this kid except possession of a book. Pretty flimsy. If he doesn't get off, there will be rioting in the streets.

So, this is interesting:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Anarchist-Cookbook-Peter-M-Bergman/dp/0974458902/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/203-5168511-4865530?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1191803197&sr=8-1

The above link is to Amazon in the UK where one can buy a copy of the Anarchist Cookbook for £13.15. Is Amazon being held for selling this book? Aiding and abetting terrorists?

http://www.amazon.com/Anarchist-Cookbook-William-Powell/dp/0974458902/ref=sr_1_2/002-4626103-3518451?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1191802899&sr=8-2

The link above leads to the same book from the US Amazon. I think there is new stock for $20 and 46 used copies as well. I think we should all buy a copy and get our friends to buy a copy. Just buy the book. See what the US government thinks of that!

Check out the US link there - fascinating note from the author.

The article specifically stated that there were previous charges in October for possession of "materials" to commit terrorism. The materials were not itemized. I don't think this is just about a book. It seems as if the "journalist" really glossed over that point.

So, he is charged with having several books.

That is so much better.

I know that you and Jericho are both not so eaily mislead by semantics, so I am going to assume your coffee maker must be on the fritz and explain this slowly:

No, the books were considered "information", the "materials" seem to be chemicals he was hiding under the bed. Can't be certain of the case since the name isn't used, but if it is the same West Yorkshire youth that shows up under my Google searches, he hid explosive chemicals in his and little brothers bedroom after he recently returned from an extended visit to Pakistan. So, it's not about a book or many books. Sounds likely that this little SOB is up to no good. The book is just a little more evidence towards the motivation of obtaining and storing the chemicals.

Even if that is so, he should be charged for havingt explosives, not having a book. Making ownership of a book a crime under any circumstance sends us down the slippery slope of censorship.

There goes someone else doing research! What's that crap about? We're wacky, pissed off ultra-liberals! We don't care about logic! :)

All kidding aside. Absolutely nail the kid to the wall for illegal explosives possession. But book possession? Especially this book! Every pissed off kid owns this or a similar book. I have nearly bought copies for myself more than once.

I just rewatched "The Manhattan Project" yesterday. An old fav of mine. For those that have been under a rock for the last two or three decades, the plot revolves around a smart kid stealing some plutonium and building an atomic bomb. In the case of the movie, the kid did his homework, gathered the knowledge he needed from libraries and built the bomb from easy to find bits and pieces. The hard parts to get were the plutonium and C4.

My point here is that TMP points out that dangerous knowledge is already out there for anyone to find. The author of TAC pointed out that he gathered most of his recipes for the book from the library. If we make one book illegal, the books that book was culled from are suddenly easy targets, then related books, etc. Slippery slope indeed!

Sorry. I am way not cool enough to post a link! I just googled West Yorkshire youth terrorist and then did the pointing and clicking thing that is about the total of my computer abilities.
