I have always discounted Megadeth and I don't know why. This is a good song. Maybe it's the (Dear GODS!) overly cheesy name. (I'm looking at you Metallica!)
Maybe it's that Dave Mustain is an ambitious, egotistical, talentless hack. Not all of that is true, I'm sure, no matter how many times I've heard it from people in the industry. And, obviously from this song, the sun shines even on a dog's ass now and then.
I find it interesting that Megadeth has retooled this song for the NuMetal generation. The addition of the female voice, one that can actually sing, is a nice bit of brinkmanship.
So, go Dave, go Megadeth - please bring back Hair Metal - I miss it!
Dave Mustaine has an ego. He is clearly insane and to this day is as bitter as he was on the bus ride home when he was thrown out of Metallica. He actually managed to drive Megadeth's easy-going bassist Dave Ellison out of the band, so he cannot be a nice, or even tolerable, person. No one who has floated through Megadeth's lineup is without a story of how Mustaine managed to sabotage the band just as they were about to hit big.
But he is no hack. Say what you will be he has stuck with progressive thrash long after Metallica started writing pop songs with distortion pedals. Like anyone he has his clunkers. But this song can still bring tears to my eyes. Symphony of Destruction rocks my ass as much as it did 15 years ago. Long live Megadeth.
That's the one I liked! Symphony of Destruction! I knew there was another Megadeth song I liked!
I'll take back hack. Frankly, I don't know that much about him or Megadeth. But, after listening to this a few times today, I want to go back and have a listen.
A year or so ago, I did about the same thing with a different band and have enjoyed what I have heard so far. Iron Maiden is an awesome act - I now know what all the fuss was about when I was younger. I wish I hadn't missed them.
