lol. I got the point. He's preaching to the choir.
Anyway, I did a little research and it's kinda fucked up- the Catholic religion has started calling the Holy Sacrament of Matrimony "marriage". That's BS, because I know for a FACT that my 12 years of Catholic education taught me that it's "matrimony" that's holy, because anyone can get "married" by a Justice of the Peace. Matrimony is what it's called when it's blessed by God.
So, all those Catholic people (like my mom) that just don't want two gay people to get "married"... why??
Oh... my original point was that I think there's a conspiracy by the Catholic Church to change the word to "marriage" just so they have something to say against gay people doing it. That's pretty low.
The words are meaningless. No one is talking about forcing churches to perform, or even recognize, marriages in violation of their beliefs. Just as the Catholic Church (or any church) does not recognize civil marriages or marriages of other religions for straights, they can happily go along refusing to recognize them for gays.
Mom's only reason for being against gay marriage is because they want to call it "marriage" and to her, that's a holy thing. Change it to "union" or something, and she'd be fine with it.
Is a civil marriage between atheist breeders holy? If not, then she doesn't need to worry about the holiness of civil marriage between gays. Atheist or not.
Last I checked, their is a separation in this country between church and state, no matter how many people refuse to recognize it.
Having stated that, if "marriage" is a religious state - if marriage is somehow ordained in religious circles - why is the State involved at all? If marriage is something religious, then the government needs to stop using that term.
From now on, State and Local governments should issue "civil union licenses" or "partnership licenses" or some other bit of legalese. Get the word marriage out of it, no more legally issued "marriage licenses". We allow the "marriages" that currently exist to be grand-fathered in, but from this point out, no more marriage licenses.
Then, the state can issue whatever they want as long as it's fair and equal.
Get your religious chocolate out of my civil union peanut butter! :)
That's just more of the same bullshit. There is a legal contract two people can enter for their mutual benefit. It's called marriage. What makes more sense, making that contract available to all consenting adults who wish to pursue it? Or going through hoops to end up at the same place with a different word?
