The Osage River bridge is EXACTLY the intent of the stimulus money going to the USDoT, which is headed by a Republican, BTW.
The idea is to push forward thousands of projects that need to be done but State governments have not been able to raise money to complete them.
They said it right in the report - Missouri has promised to rebuild that bridge. Meanwhile, a vital piece of that small community is falling apart. One of these days, a truck going across that bridge is going to go THROUGH the bridge and that will put that little town on the map real fast.
Mayor Slay and everyone else that hasn't read the stimulus package or listened to POTUS can bitch all they want. And as for the (I'll bet regular Rush Limbaugh listener) Fox-pert from St. Louis U (or whatever) - he's right! Public works projects do not lead to "continued growth". However, they repair or create necessary infrastructure that is used for decades to come. St. Louis can thank major works projects under the WPA for much of it's infrastructure. There is a certain storm drain in STL that often stinks to high heaven, but it frequently diverts flood waters, preventing total disasters on a Katrina scale. Thank you, WPA! They even signed the darn thing!
Yes, no continued growth, but public works projects keep people fed and warm while the world is falling apart around them. I realize some fat cat right winger or some tenured professor might be too separated from reality to realize this, but when people go hungry for too long, they get cranky. And when you don't have a job and nothing better to do, you have time to get creative. When those people are ready to riot, they won't do it in Osage, they'll do it in Jeff City and St. Louis!
So, I have two words for you, Mayor Slay: Shut up! Instead of paving one street (like it does any good - a freshly paved street in STL is a maze of potholes in a year) - find ten necessary projects that $200k could do a world of good and put people to work! Stop bitching and use your brain!
Don't confuse Slay with the dipshit with the Ph.D. If the rural Republican dominated legislature had actually sent STL some of the money we need, they could still easily have rebuilt that bridge and a bunch of other little podunk necessities without a stink being raised.
This isn't about following the intent of Congress or President Obama (who had his single largest rally in STL). This is about the hicks in Missourah trying to choke the life out of STL and KC. And they are succeeding.
